what separates us

astounding little connections
between humans
of a certain age
from an uncertain time
have become
the magic
the thread
that keeps us part of
this oddly, patchworked
shawl
wrapped in the warmth
of yesterdays
we come connected
unusual chains of events
bring the non-blood tied
to our tables
we thought our
true family
gone
they are somewhere
laughing
waiting for our perfect
arrival
meanwhile
they play
grand participants
twirling bits of serendipity’s
tattered frock
flinging pieces to the wind
landing them square on our heads
leaving us, mouths agape
mumbling in disbelief
at the lack of degrees
that separate us
from new strangers
