road trippin’

in the old days
road trips were
unplanned
we tossed sleeping bags
minimal clothes
a few necessities
and the
dog
into the rear
of a van
and drove.
‘out of here’
was our sole
destination
and we’d be
sure
after driving
for hours
or days
when it
came into
view

as we age
plans must be
confirmed
time off
from work
a bed
a route
a certain amount of
cash, a credit card
(just in case)
a destination.
all must
be
in order
(in order)
to even
get
out of town

i want to be
free of life’s
burdens
again
free
of these shackles
that hold
me bound
on safer turf.
they cut
deep into
my
wrists
these arms
bleed with longing
this core
aches
with memories
of that kind of
freedom

perhaps its
important
not to rely
on my traveling
partner
who’s edgy
nerves
and scorpio need
for extreme order
frazzle easier
than my own

instead, i want
to remember
the days of old
how summers
felt
trippin’ wild
on any highway
destination:
the
road
out
of dodge
