young thugs
are holdin’ up
the outside walls
of main street’s
cash n’ carry

in pahoa town
they sit
day after day
defining their cool
ruling this corner
in paradise

in pahoa town
young locals
meet on the
day after day
for a high
for a buck
for the next hit
planning their
next raid
the next unreported
of someone else’s
lovingly tended

in pahoa town
its the norm
aunties and uncles
cousins and somebody’s
wear the uniforms
enforcing invisible laws
that no one dares
to report to
retaliation is fierce
in this paradise
just ask the thugs
any day
any hour
in front of
cash n’ carry
they’ll be the first
to snicker
‘mo’ bettah to let
it be, brah’…..

as exercise or exorcism, i write...for the eyes of others, for my eyes and heart only, for the love and the rage, i write...to release the gamut of emotion...to tell the truth and say what's often thought but not written...
