space invasion

the personal space
of those generous enough
to offer their homes and gardens
up to strangers
to ‘tour’
must hold little
in the way of the
sacred

i watched today
as strangers gushed
with great envy
over home and gardens
apparently finer than
their own spaces
all for a cause

strangers tromping through
personal space
must mean its non-existent
must eliminate the personal
filling space instead with pride/translate: ego

it must be why
those opening
their homes and gardens
to strangers
go to such lengths
such financial outlay
such quests for perfection
in the arrangement
of their perfect things

such extravagance!
my mother used to call it
‘houseproud’
all that mattered
is what others
thought of you
your house
and your things
in it and around it
its how you were judged
the merit and the measure of you

is it different
when we fill our
own meager surroundings
with plain old stuff
that we’ve admired
or collected
does it make us less?
should we feel shame
inviting friends to
our personal space
because of what it lacks

is it different when we,
with hands in the dirt
plant to enjoy the beauty
plant to harvest later
foods to cook in our
small, simple kitchens

i have no landscaper
no architect to design
dreams for me
i only have simplicity
by design
but today
i coveted the beauty
envied the strangers
for their possessions
of home
and garden
came home to my
personal space
and felt depression’s cloak
suffocate me in
its heat
in its
shallowness
